Before we started, the examiner strongly emphasized one important point:
We had to explicitly request everything we wanted or needed.
We should not expect the controller to automatically issue every clearance required for the next step of the flight.
This became particularly important throughout the practical examination.
Erste Aufgabe: Anflug auf Köln
The first exercise was an arrival at Cologne. We were free to choose our aerodrome of departure.
I started with a complete initial call and provided all the relevant flight information.
When I reached the reporting point, the controller simply replied:
“Roger.”
At this point, I had to recognize that I had not yet received clearance to enter the control zone. I therefore had to actively request permission to enter.
After requesting the clearance, I was cleared to enter the control zone and join the traffic circuit for runway 06, with instructions to report on base.
Platzrunde und Landung
When I reported on base, I was asked to state my heading and was subsequently cleared to land on runway 06.
After landing, I had to actively request permission to vacate runway 06 via E.
I then received the following taxi route to the GAT:
E – A3 – A – B – T – GAT
This concluded the first exercise.
Zweite Aufgabe: Abflug vom Apron V
The second exercise started at Apron V.
I made another complete initial call and received taxi clearance towards runway 31R.
During taxi, I had to cross runway 24.
This was an important part of the examination: The initial taxi clearance towards runway 31R did not automatically include permission to cross runway 24.
I therefore had to hold position at the runway 24 holding point and explicitly request clearance to cross the runway.
Only after receiving this clearance was I allowed to continue.
Runway 31R und Special VFR
After crossing runway 24, I continued to the holding point for runway 31R at intersection A2.
I then changed frequency and contacted Tower.
Tower issued a Special VFR clearance. The clearance included the following instructions:
climb to 2.200 ft
report passing 1.300 ft
after passing 1.700 ft, proceed directly to the compulsory reporting point E1
It was important to listen carefully, write down the relevant information and correctly read back the required parts of the clearance.
Verlassen der Frequenz
Once I reached E1, I made the required report.
Again, I had to take the initiative and explicitly request permission to leave the frequency.
The controller approved my request, which concluded the practical exercise.
Mein Fazit und Tipp für zukünftige BZF-E-Prüflinge
My main recommendation for future students is to be very proactive during the examination.
You must clearly request every clearance you need. Do not assume that the controller will automatically provide the clearance required for your next action.
This was particularly important for:
entering the control zone, crossing a runway and leaving the frequency.
A general clearance does not automatically include permission for these actions.
The examination therefore requires more than simply knowing standard phrases. You need to understand the procedures, follow the situation carefully and communicate with ATC independently.
My biggest takeaway from the examination is simple:
If you need a clearance, ask for it. Never assume that you already have it.
